Is a polyurethane foam mattress safe for babies?

Yes, any of the Baby Elegance mattresses that are created using foam meet the highest of safety standards in the UK and Europe.

Should I buy a new mattress for my second baby?

This comes down to a few factors. We would only suggest doing this if it was your own mattress and wouldn’t recommend taking from a friend or buying online. You should always ensure that it was stored well and is free from damage before using it again.

How thick should a baby mattress be?

The depth of the mattress depends on where it is being used. For example, a Moses or crib size would usually be 3-5cm whereas a cot should be 10cm. Always check the user manual for the cot or crib to find out what mattress size is intended for that item.

Can I wash a foam baby mattress?

Washing a foam mattress can be tricky, it depends on the makeup of the mattress. Foam can take a long time to dry and thus can pick up mould and mildew during the drying stage. You might also cause damage to the mattress.

How do I clean a baby mattress?

Remove the cot mattress, cover, or any bedding. These can usually be thrown in the laundry and safely washed with detergent.


Scrub the mattress all over with warm water and a gentle detergent. Make sure you thoroughly wipe the detergent from the cot mattress to ensure that no residue is left.


Always make sure the mattress has fully dried before adding the cover back on.

Is it safe to incline a baby mattress?

This is not recommended.


Current recommendations suggested that the safest way for your baby to sleep is in an empty cot or crib without the use of wedges or positioners.

Are foam or sprung mattresses best for baby cots?

Today we have lots of options for your baby's mattress. We have Foam, Fibre, memory foam and pocket spring.


Choosing the right mattress for you will depend on where it is being used. For example, if you are buying a mattress for a cot bed then maybe a fibre or pocket spring mattress might be the right option as it offers all-over body support for your baby/toddler.

Can my baby lie on a pillow and have a mattress in the cot?

It is not recommended for your baby to lie on a pillow. All mattresses must comply to BS EN 16890 for sale in Europe. Pillows would not comply with these standards and may cause injury to your baby.

Can I use a second-hand mattress for my baby?

This is not something we would recommend. Sheep is so important for your baby's devolvement so you want to ensure they are sleeping on a clean safe mattresses that you know comply to the relevant safety standards.

Do I need to spend a fortune on a baby mattress?

Absolutely not! At Baby Elegance we have a wide range of mattresses to suit all budgets with prices starting from €25/£22. All of our mattresses are hand made in Ireland for over 40 years and receive the same quality standards.

Is it normal for a baby mattress to smell?

Initially on opening your mattresses, if there is a slight smell there is no need for concern. This will usually pass in a short time and is not harmful. This can be caused by packaging. However, if your mattress has a strong odour after using it might be a sign that it needs to be cleaned or checked for dampness.

How long should babies stay in cribs?

A crib generally should be used from birth – 6 months or 9kg. If the baby can sit up or roll over unaided then it's time to switch to a cot.

Are crib mobiles worth it?

Person preference however if you plan to use it for day time napping along with night time then maybe this will be a good idea for some entertainment during the day.

Can twin babies sleep in the same crib?

Depending on the size of the crib it is possible in the very early months. If you are looking for something compact for twins for the first 6 months maybe have a look at the Baby Elegance bedside travel cot.

How do I get a baby used to a crib?

This can take time and the baby will naturally get used to the smell and feel of the crib. A good tip, once they are used to the crib, is to use it for naps and night-time so baby relates the crib to sleep.

When should I move our toddler out of the crib?

Absolutely! Cribs are designed to be used from birth – 6 months or 9kg. It’s a really nice way to keep newborns close to you in the early months.

How many sheets do you need for a crib?

You will only need one sheet at a time however it is a good idea to have more than one so you can always be washing another. Babies have lots of little accidents.

How do I clean a crib?

Depending on the model the covers are either removable or can be hand washed on the crib itself. Most cribs will have washing instructions on each part of the crib.

When do toddlers start climbing out of a crib?

This happens around 5-6 months in general but can be sooner or longer depending on the baby. Once this happens it's time to move to a cot or cot bed.

Are bedside cribs safe?

Yes for sure! All bedside cribs sold in Europe should meet the European safety standards for co-sleeping. All models are different so it's really important to follow the manufactures user manual when fitting to the bed.

Do babies need a crib?

Not necessarily! Baby can sleep in a cot or cot bed from birth and is perfectly safe to do so.

How do I get my baby from moses basket to cot?

This transition can be hard for baby and parent but if possible maybe try to have the cot or cot bed in the room with you for a few nights to let baby get used to the new bed whilst still close to you.

How do I stop a 5 month old rolling over in the cot?

This is normal at 5 – 6 months. The best thing to do is place baby at the feet to foot position in the cot or cot bed and avoid adding items as barriers as these can cause suffocation.

What age do babies go in a cot?

How do I assemble a baby cot?

Generally, cots are very easy to assemble and come with around 12 x bolts that simply connect the sides and base together.

What blanket should I use in a cot?

In the early months, a cellular blanket is best for your baby as it has holes in the blanket allowing them to regulate their temperature.

How do I choose the right cot?

How do I keep a cot warm in the winter?

It is important to have the nursery at a stable temperature as babies find it difficult in the early months to regulate their temperature. Avoid adding heating fans to a room where possible.

How do I stop my baby climbing out of the cot?

If your baby is climbing out of the cot, it is then time to lower the base of the cot to a lower position.

Can twins share a cot?

Yes! In the early months, it is fine for twins to share a cot and studies have shown that they will sleep better being in the same cot. The advice is to sleep them with their feet at opposite ends of the cot.

How long is a cot bed?

A cot bed tends to be the standard size of 70 x 140cm internal size.

When do I move a toddler from cot to bed?

The recommendation would be to keep the cot bed in cot mode as long as possible for safety. On average it is around 2 years of age when most parents will remove the sides and convert.

How do we transition from cot to bed?

To convert most cot beds to bed mode you simply have to remove the sides and adjust the base fitting to the ends. Make sure to keep the fittings if you plan to convert back or pass on the cot bed.

Which cot bed should I buy?

Depending on your budget Baby Elegance have a wide range of cot beds starting from €180.

What's the difference between a cot and a cot bed?

A cot generally is smaller (60 x 120cm internal dimension) and does not convert to a bed later. A cot bed tends to be 70 x 140cm and can later convert to a junior bed up to the age of around 4 years.

How long do cot beds usually last?

A cot bed generally lasts from birth – 4 years of age.

When do I lower the cot bed?

It is time to lower the base of a cot or cot bed when your baby can roll over unaided or sit up unaided. This means there is a possibility they could climb over the side so it is time to lower the base.

Do you use cot bed mattress protectors on their own?

It would be recommended to use a fitted sheet over the mattress protector as some protectors do not have a soft finish.

How do I adjust the height of the cot bed?

To adjust the base you simply remove the 4 bolts from the base and lower into the position you require and bolt the base back into place.
