If you’re a first-time mum, choosing a pram can be quite overwhelming. But a buggy is actually one of the biggest and most important purchases you will make for your new arrival. And not only that, you need to know that you’re going to spend quite a lot to get the perfect one, as it’s also one of the most expensive things to buy for your little one.
First things first
You might have heard people talking about prams, buggies, pushchairs and strollers. Although you know what they mean, is there really a difference between all of them? Yes! It’s important to get to know the difference between them all before you make any decisions:
- Prams – Prams are designed for newborn babies up until around six months old, while they are at the stage that they still need to lie flat. They are usually parent-facing, come with a bassinet or carrycot, and may or may not have the ability to fold flat. Some prams may be converted into a pushchair when the time comes around. - Pushchairs – These are generally sturdy and are more likely to be tailored towards older babies and toddlers. What are travel systems?
This is actually a much easier way to ensure you have everything you need for your little one’s arrival. It combines a carrycot, a pushchair and an infant carrier/car seat – the car seat and carrycot can both click in and out of the pushchair, which can be handy when you have a sleeping baby who you don’t want to wake.
Multiples
If you’re expecting twins, you’ll be looking for a double pushchair to cart the new arrivals around in. With a twin pushchair, you can sit your babies side by side, or in a tandem with one on top and one underneath. There are many models available where both seats can be fully reclined, and have the ability to take a car seat/infant carrier. However, it’s important to note that some twins and tandems are not suitable for newborn babies.

What do I need to look out for when purchasing my buggy?
- Ease of use – Many pushchairs nowadays come with one-hand-fold mechanisms, making folding up your pushchair a little less stressful. Also, consider the type of terrain you are likely to encounter most often so that your pushchair will fit in with your lifestyle.
- Easy to clean – Newborns, as well as older babies and toddlers, can be a bit messy from time to time, so it is always best to look out for a buggy with covers that can be easily removed and washed.
- Car boot space – Will it fit in the boot of your car, and will it also fit in after you’ve done the weekly shop?
- Travelling with baby – Whether you use public transport regularly, or going on holiday, keeping the buggy’s weight in mind is a big plus! Something lightweight and compact will make travelling much easier with your baby in tow. Also, keep in mind that a visor/hood will be adequate to keep the sun off your baby’s delicate skin.
- Shopping basket – A must for most parents is, of course, having adequate space for packing up some shopping somewhere on your pushchair, as your hands are going to be full.
- Teamwork – Make sure you, your partner, and anyone else who will be using your pushchair, know how to fold it up or remove and attach the car seat/carrycot/bassinet before your little one arrives.
